Herceg Novi Fortresses
Herceg Novi's fortresses tell the story of the town's centuries under Venetian, Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian rule. Kanli Kula (the Bloody Tower) crowns the Old Town — a 16th-century Ottoman fortification now used as an open-air summer theatre; entry around €2. Forte Mare sits at the sea-facing corner of the Old Town walls above Richardova Glava beach. Španjola (the Spanish Fort) stands on the hillside above Topla, reached by a steep 25–30 minute walk through pines; entry is free and the panorama across the Bay of Kotor is the payoff. Most forts open 09:00–20:00 in summer and shorter hours in shoulder season.
