The building is relatively smal…The Archangel Michael Church sits at the centre of the Old Town square, the main gathering space just inside the Old Town walls. The building is relatively small. Single nave with a square bell tower on the southwest corner and a shallow dome over the crossing. Exterior walls are faced with rough-cut local limestone; the interior holds a traditional Orthodox iconostasis with icons painted in the early 20th century by regional artists. A small gallery at the rear of the nave is used by the choir during services. The church remains in active use by the Serbian Orthodox community of Herceg Novi.

Divine Liturgy is celebrated on Sunday mornings and on the major Orthodox feast days; the feast of the Archangel Michael (21 November) is the church's patronal day and draws a larger gathering from across the municipality. Outside service times the church is usually open for quiet visits. A modest dress code applies inside. Covered shoulders and knees. the Old Town square immediately outside functions as the social heart of the Old Town, with cafés, the clock tower, a small bookshop and seasonal craft stalls on weekend mornings. Access from the main town is through the Clock Tower gate.
