The town descends in terraces from the wooded slopes of Mount Orjen, with Forte Mare anchoring the seafront and the upper bastion of Kanli Kula commanding the ridge above. Igalo lies four kilometres west, Topla one kilometre east, and Savina monastery rises from the pine slopes between.
The walled Old Town was raised by the Bosnian king Tvrtko I in 1382 and shaped successively by the Ottomans, Venetians, Austrians and French. The medieval core retains its perimeter walls, three signature squares, the 18th-century Sahat Kula clock tower over the main gate, and the Orthodox Church of the Archangel Michael with its carved eagle emblem. Savina monastery, founded in the 11th century, holds three Orthodox churches inside a cypress-shaded courtyard above Meljine.
Visitors arrive at Forte Mare and the marina via Tivat or Dubrovnik airports and the Adriatic Highway. Boat tours from the harbour reach the Mamula Island fortress, the Blue Cave on the Luštica peninsula, and the Lady of the Rocks across the bay. Restaurants line the Pet Danica seafront promenade and the Old Town squares, with Igalo offering the Institute Dr Simo Milošević's mud and thalassotherapy treatments four kilometres west. The directory covers accommodation, tours, transport, restaurants and services across the wider municipality.
