It…Herceg Novi began as a fortress founded in 1382 by Tvrtko I of Bosnia, where a small fishing village had stood, and the Old Town is its historic walled core. Its name, Novi, meaning new, outlasted the first name given to the town, after Saint Stephen.

The fortifications include Forte Mare on the water and Kanli Kula, an Ottoman tower on the upper edge of the town. A clock tower built by the Austrians in the 19th century also stands in the Old Town.
