Kanli Kula is one of the most prominent defensive structures in Herceg Novi and a defining feature of the town’s historic skyline. Positioned above Herceg Novi (Old Town / Central), the fortress occupies an elevated stone plateau that overlooks the entrance to the Bay of Kotor. Historical records indicate that the structure also operated as a prison, a role that contributed to its enduring name, which translates as “Bloody Tower.”

In the 20th century, the function of the fortress shifted significantly. The interior courtyard was adapted into an open-air amphitheatre, transforming the former military stronghold into a cultural venue. Today, Kanli Kula is recognised as one of the municipality’s principal historical sites, hosting concerts, theatrical performances, and film screenings during the summer season. This adaptive reuse illustrates the evolving relationship between heritage preservation and contemporary cultural life in Herceg Novi.

The panoramic views from the upper sections of the fortress form an integral part of its appeal. From the stone ramparts, visitors can observe the dense urban fabric of the Old Town below, the terracotta roofs stepping toward the waterfront, and the wider Bay extending toward the Adriatic. The physical ascent to the site reinforces its historic defensive logic while also shaping the visitor experience.
